Fighting with Fire: A Recruits’ Story

Sep

It’s been 7yrs since I left the Fire Academy. Today I took a Physical Ability Test. Same test as usual. Start off with a weighted vest that is worn the length of your exam. You through hose pack on your shoulders, climb up the stairs to the 5th Floor. Drop your hose off and step over to the landing where there is a rope attached to a length of hose. Pull it up and then over the railing.  Return back downstairs with your hose. When you get to the bottom drop the hose and go over to the weighted sled. Pick up the 10lbs dead-blow hammer and drive the sled backwards 5FT.
When your done proceed over to a charged 1.75inch hose line and pull it forward 75 Ft.

I’ve always been average. I’ve never really won anything. Today although I was last. I was ended up being #1 by 20-25 seconds.
I had a belief long time ago when I chose CrossFit as my training regimen for today’s test, I believed that I could get in great shape for this particular test. What I have grown to see is the many benefits that type of training has done for me. I’ve gained confidence in myself. I’ve gained a belief in myself that I have lost. I’ve gained raw strength, speed, and endurance that I put to the test today. I will obtain my goals and I will be hired before I know it.
Here it is Black and White

Last year over the Summer my Firefighter certification expired due to not getting hired. I was unable to challenge the State Test and lost out on a few job offers. Graduating back in 2007 from the Fire Academy and being a Paramedic since 2009 I struggled to find employment and lost my confidence. Working out at Predators I couldn’t finish any of the WOD’s, i was discouraged. Yet something in the back of my head was telling me that I just wasn’t ready that If I stick to it, it will happen. 2013 came and went.
Started off 2014 with a renewed passion. Made some life changes and then I noticed doors started to open. I chose to create a new path for myself and found the struggles and fears I once had where no longer there. I signed up for the CrossFit Games Open and did better than I thought. Over the summer I asked Coach if he thought I was ready to compete and I think he was shocked that I would attempt to compete. Not because he didn’t think I can do it, but more that I started to believe and pushed myself to be better.

Joining a competition is a way to measure the hard work and the effort that you, your family, and Coaching staff put in. It’s the reward. It’s a tool that is used to help in your training.
So now that I completed not 1 not 2 but 3 competition in 8 months. Ive challenged the State of Florida Firefighter Exam both written and Physical Ability.

I’m preparing for my 2nd USAW MEET (competition #4 for the year) in 6 weeks.
I can attribute this renewed hope and success to CrossFit and my Coach at Crossfit Predators Gary Roberts.

CrossFit has helped me . I found something in it that I have enjoyed. It’s Physically demanding . It’s mentally tasking. I was taught how to push myself harder than ever. If you stick to the plan and you execute that plan and it works then why change. There is no substitutions for great coaching. I stick to CrossFit because it works for me.
I started off 15 months ago with just wanting to get in shape to pass a Physical agility test. I was able to Walk up to Ocala’s Test, have a 5min walk through on what I needed to do and went out there and did it. First try. No granted that first try was day 1 of a Refresher Course that was being offered by CTAE in Ocala, but the point is, I knew I could do it. I believed in me.
Now the funny part is during the actual State Test there was a brief moment that I could have sworn I heard Coach Gary Roberts yelling at me to breathe!!!
Haha.
Thank you all.
Image was taken after completing my Test. No results were given until 2days later yet I had the biggest smile because I never thought for 1sec the what if. We were shown a plan, do this, and this and this, and so I did it.

I started the summer with the idea of shooting Medium Format. I researched about different MF cameras out there and and when I found a forum post on FM that showed images shot on MF, I new I was going to get one. The image I saw was shot in BW. It has great tonality and amazing detail. I was in luck. My local CL Ad had someone in Miami with an old Medium Format camera that was all manual. For $300 it was cheap enough to test and if I wasn’t satisfied with the quality I wasn’t losing much.

I received the newer Canon version of this lens. I read a lot of the reviews and not once did I read errors occur with this lens. As soon as I mounted it on a Canon 20D and took my first shot, there was a problem. Half the view finder screen is out of focus. I emailed Tokina today but did not get a reply. Maybe tomorrow they will answer.
Tokina reviews were all positive. Build quality is excellent. Ultra wide angle on a crop body. Metal mount. 77mm filter thread. Lens ships with a petal shaped hood. That is all I can comment on until a get a excellent copy. Does it focus fast? I dont know because it focuses wrong or its misaligned. Lens flare and CA can not be judged because thisbis a bad copy.

Hopefully Tokina, located in California, will replace this with a great, working lens.

We completed week 1 of the grueling 2.5 weeks of Hoses & Ladders today. Many of us feel like fire fighters, and we havent even attacked the fire yet!
We divided into 2 teams Ladders Team 1 (Squads 1-3) and Hoses Team 2 (squads 4-6). Cant tell you much of whats going on with the Ladder Team but as far as the Hose team, were having a blasted.
Very few of us have had our mistakes and if we take our time and think of what we need to do then we will be alright. I’ve started taking notes almost a step by step of what we need to know about the Hose part of the training. Im hoping that it will not only help me and Ice out, it will help future recruits as well.

P.S.
In case you havent heard Gangway Vol 3 is out, get it while it lasts

Today was day 2 of 3 in our Performance Objectives.
Day 1 was not that bad. I failed 2 of my knots that I knew how to do. Today I failed 2 of my Tying of the Tools. The one that gave me the hardest time during practice I smoked by until I was asked to hold up the uncharged hoseline, and my knot slipped. FAILED. The other one was a stupid mistake at the beginning and it came back and got me in the end, FAILED.
The positive was that we had a practice session after everything and I managed to make them correct and under time. That was a bonus. A way to leave the Academy for a few days on a positive experience.
Until tomorrow when I start chasing Ice and her daughters around the house tin them up!.. heheheh, Im sure they wont mind….
